Guided Reading
I will be updating this site with guided reading information, including information about reading levels and benchmark goals. This may assist you with helping your child select appropriate or "Good Fit" reading materials. When we talk about good fit books, I will often reference shoes that are good fit, too big and too small.
Good Fit Books
Student should be able to:
- read a selected passage of text with 5 or less errors.
- read fluently and smoothly with proper rate and speed. They should not sound like robots.
- discuss the book.
Books to Grow Into
Sometimes, students are able to read the words, but the subject material isn't appropriate for 2nd grade. I talk about those books as "Grow Into" books.
Too Small Books
These are the books that are too easy for your child. They don’t challenge and grow their skills. For example, your child is a level J reader consistently choosing level D books.
We also can double check our choices with the acronym
I PICK….
I Pick Books
- I choose books to read
- Purpose-What is my purpose for reading this book? (Persuade, Inform, Entertain)
- Interest - Is this a book that interests you?
- Comprehend - Do you understand what is going on in the book?
- Know the Words - Can I sound out most of the words on a page? (5 or more errors, probably is a “Grow Into" book.
