Service Learning

Service Learning is a method of teaching and learning that combines academic work with service to the community.  Students learn by doing through a clear application of skills and knowledge while helping meet needs in the school or greater community.  Slinger School District is recognized by DPI as a top school leading the way in service learning.  Many of the service projects listed on this page combine academics with service and, therefore, are service-learning.  To learn more, visit http://dpi.wi.gov/fscp/slhmpage.html

The 8 Essential Elements of Service-Learning Include:

  • Meaningful Service
  • Link to Curriculum
  • Reflection
  • Diversity
  • Youth Voice
  • Community Partnerships
  • Progress Monitoring
  • Duration and Intensity
Keyboard Service Learning
The Keyboarding Word Processing classes at Slinger High School paired up with the 4th and 5th grade classes at Slinger Elementary School to review and improve typing and word processing skills. The high school students helped the elementary students create a holiday card and played fun games to enforce proper technique and the keyboard. To complete this holiday typing service learning project Ms. Feucht and Mrs. Murkowski's classes at the high school worked with Mrs. Shaumberg, Mrs. Field and Mrs. Buhr's elementary classes.
Freshmen Support the Food Pantry
Freshmen English 9 students responded to a unit on the Holocaust by bringing awareness to the local food pantry in a service-learning experience. Students created a 30-second PSA video and wrote letters to the editor of the West Bend Daily News to encourage the community to support the Slinger Food Pantry. They also collected a dozen boxes of soup and 20 packages of toilet paper to donate to the food pantry.
Leadership Group
The fourth grade leadership group at Allenton Elementary planned a gift drive for children with cancer at Children’s Hospital. After going in to each classroom and explaining the need to help these children by brightening up their Easters, the whole school gave generously. The kids used all of the donations to create Easter baskets full of fun gifts for many children at the hospital. The fourth-graders thought of this idea because one of their classmates has cancer and has spent a lot of time at the Children’s Hospital this year. Although the students were not able to personally deliver the Easter baskets due to health safety at the hospital, they had fun imagining the kid’s happy faces on Easter morning!
American Studies at Kenosha Civil War Museum
The sophomore American Studies students created a binder of activities and lessons for the curator of education at the Kenosha Civil War Museum to use with future high school students attending the two year old museum. Some students worked in groups to prepare pamphlets and digital stories showcasing the positive qualities of the museum. Others created audio for dioramas in the Fiery Trial exhibit or worked on the binder summarizing the experience.
Eat This, Not That!
Fourth grade students at Slinger Elementary, as part of a Service Learning Project, developed a healthier version of a recipe by changing at least three ingredients. Students brought in samples of their new healthier food and provided a free Recipe Book of their yummy creations.
Blue Ribbon Week
Blue Ribbon Week, held in the second full week of December, is a service learning project facilitated by students in Mass Media class. These students raise awareness about child abuse and the prevention of it. Supplies are collected and donated to the Friends of Abused Families Shelter in West Bend.
Cell Phone, Ink Cartridge Drive
The cell phone, ink cartridge drive occurs during the month of January. Announcements are made over the P.A. and posters are hung about the importance of recycling these products. Then items are sent to a company in return for money. Then money is then used for some type of charitable organization.
Public Service Announcements
Public service announcements give the students an opportunity to research a topic they feel strongly about. In pairs, they took their information and created a 30 second ad for their cause. The kids used their writing skills and voices to create a message to inform the public about their topic. These PSA's were then displayed on the district website over the summer for all to listen to.
Pocket Stories
Pocket Stories is a service-learning activity to promote literacy with children. Freshmen English students gain valuable communication skills in speaking, listening, reading fluency, and non-verbal communication as they read stories to kindergarten thru third grade students. As they read, freshmen pull out objects from their bags that are painted with the main character on it to make the story come alive. At the end, freshmen ask the kids comprehension questions. The bags are donated to Slinger Elementary for teachers to use them in their classrooms.
Tobacco Prevention
The freshman seminar classes shared their knowledge of tobacco prevention information with students at the middle school, high school and Slinger Elementary School.  Freshman seminar students brought awareness of tobacco directly to 3rd graders by creating an interactive approach.  They incorporated fun little activities as they gave their message of the dangers of using tobacco to the students in Mrs. Elsbernd and Mrs. Scarseth’s classrooms.
American Dream Community Breakfast
Modern American Literature students and fourth graders at Slinger Elementary hosted a breakfast in order to survey community members about their views of the American Dream. This investigation process also included speeches, writing prompts, and Internet research.
