What is DECA?

DECA is a marketing, management, and entrepreneurship based student-run organization.  Its focus is to prepare students for the real world of work and provides students with skills and knowledge to succeed in the new global economy.

How do you know if you want to be in DECA?  Answer the following questions.

Are you interested in a Career in Marketing or Business?

Do you want to have the opportunity to travel?

Do you want to meet new people?

Do you want to learn how to speak better and improve your business/interpersonal skills?

Would you like to see how you can apply what you learn in the marketing/business classroom?

Would you like to have the chance to win money for travel scholarships and for college?

Would you like to meet professionals in the field?

If you answered “yes” to these questions…            ~ you should join DECA…and we would really like you too!

How do you become a member?

  1. Fill out membership form and pay your membership dues to Ms. Adams.

What do you have to do as a member?

  1. Be ACTIVE!  That means…do not just pay your dues and never do anything again.

Below is the breakdown of the year:

a.       Meetings (in room 153) and Social Events

                                                              i.      September – Kick off meeting regarding fundraising.

ii.      September or October:  Work one concession stand.

vi.      Decemberholiday party” - Write “Santa” letters to kindergarteners and prepare for our District Competition held in January.

vii.      February-Sell DATA MATCH during lunch

viii.      May- end of the year meeting/party to vote for next year’s officers and to recap our year.

ix.      DECA promotional activities -make signs for DECA week and help out students with State Projects like selling items and help running events.

b.       Sell Entertainment Books – During the first week of school you must pick up 3 entertainment books.  We require each member to sell 3 books to help us raise money for busses and our first competition.   All books must be sold by mid October.  Books may be picked up the week before school begins.

c.       COMPETE-this is what DECA is all about. If you truly want to excel, and give yourself the opportunity to travel, have fun, win scholarships, and meet new people, this is where/when it happens.  When you compete you take two tests in that event area you pick and participate in two role-plays based on scenarios that may occur in that particular field.   Don’t worry…we prepare you for everything you will encounter; however, success in competitive events does not JUST fall into your lap.  You must have dedication and work for it.  Practice, prepare and be PRESENT!  Events to compete in are on the back.  Ask Ms. Adams to help you decide what you should do!

Competitions include:

                                            i.            District Competition:  Held the 1st or 2nd Saturday in January.  ALL members are required to attend.

ii.            State Competition:  Held in March in Lake Geneva.  Top competitors from Districts are chosen to compete at the State level.  Those doing projects are automatically State Competitors.  10-14 usually advance.

iii.            International Competition:  Held late April early May.   Members competing at Internationals are those who place 1st-5th in their respective events at State.
